Recently China and the United States have agreed to host the next China-U.S. Tourism Leadership Summit at Hangzhou in the second half of 2018.

China and the United States co-initiated the annual summit in 2007, and have taken turns to host it since then. In addition to Chinese and American tourism authorities at the provincial/state level, the summit has attracted more and more municipal tourism authorities, travel agencies, hotels, and airline companies too in recent years. It has served as an important exchange platform for Chinese and U.S. governments, local tourism authorities, tourism associations, and tourism companies and played a big role in enriching bilateral cooperation, enhancing people-to-people exchange and understanding and stimulating economic development in the two countries.

The Yinchuan summit was held from September 8 to 12, 2016, under the theme of “Mutual Learning and Jointly Opening a New Age of Sino-U.S. Tourism Exchange”, increasing the knowledge and awareness of American delegates about West China. At the Atlanta summit from September 20 to 24 this year, Chinese and American tourism professionals exchanged ideas about “Tourism +” and holistic tourism and reached consensus on a wide array of issues. Chinese initiatives and ideas are gaining importance in China-U.S. tourism cooperation.

Statistical data shows that in 2016, the trips between the two countries exceeded five million for the first time, and trips made in the past decade have totaled over 30 million. Tourism has become an important bond between Chinese and American people and a highlight of the new-type power relationship between the two countries.
