On July 7, the 5th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo, organized by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), was unveiled. Among the 200-plus audience were vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee Edmund He Hou-Hua, CNTA deputy chairman Li Shihong, Yao Jian, director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., senior official from the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture and director of MGTO Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes as well as tourism professionals from the mainland, Macao, and overseas countries and regions.

Li Shihong began his remarks by congratulating on the opening of the Expo on behalf of CNTA and its chairman Li Jinzao. He said, “The market is key to tourism development. One must develop the market first in order to stimulate tourism development. And hosting expos is the short cut to boost market development. Thanks to the generous support of the Macao government and other parties concerned, four editions of the expo have been successfully held, with an increasing size, more and more diversified business forms, and growing influence, making it a famous expo in Macao.” He added, “CNTA will earnestly implement the preferential policies for Macao as always and suggest the mainland and Macao better aligning the national tourism development plan with Macao's tourism development plan, jointly exploring the Belt and Road tourism market, carrying out the Tourism+ strategy, boosting the development of diverse industries, deepening tourism cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao bay area, and accelerating the process of building it into a world-class tourist destination.”

According to Fernandes, “This is the 5th year of the expo, a year of golden opportunities for Macao to advance tourism development. With the generous support from CNTA and other parties concerned, Macao will make active use of the expo, accelerate the process of building Macao into a world-class tourism and leisure center and keep elevating its status and increasing its role in national economic development and opening up.”

This year’s expo attracted over 250 delegates from tourism authorities and companies organized by CNTA from 20 mainland provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) including Tianjin, Jiangsu, Chongqing, Guangdong and Hainan. The mainland exhibition zone is designed in such a way to celebrate the theme of “Beautiful China - 2017 Silk Road Tourism Year”. It includes the tourism commodities sales area and the tourism, leisure and vacationing area for the first time in the expo history, with 167 exhibition booths covering an area of more than 1,500 square meters, making it the biggest exhibition at the expo in terms of the number of booths and visitors and of area.

Mainland exhibitors have launched colorful interactive activities to capture the audience’s eyes. For instance, the Zhejiang delegation has invited masters of Wenzhou embroidery techniques to embroider on the spot. The Guangdong delegation filled the exhibition hall with fragrance brought by the eagle-wood exhibition and the incense ceremony it staged. The Hainan delegation treated the audience with local snacks. The Tianjin delegation invited the visitors to paint the New Year paintings and snuff bottles and do paper-cutting at the site. Besides, senior officials from the mainland attended the tourism promotional event between China and Portuguese speaking countries, where mainland tourism professionals had the chance to exchange with Macao counterparts.

It’s learnt that this year’s expo has attracted over 180 exhibitors from 48 countries and regions, covers an exhibition area of 10,000 square meters, and is divided into six exhibition zones including the Marine Silk Road, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, and China-Portugal Forum, etc.
